I was one of the millions who probably heard of Harvey Milk at some point in my life, but never connected any dots to his life. Then one summer day, while housesitting, I found an musty VHS tape of this documentary called “The Times of Harvey Milk”. Not having anything better to do, I popped it in the VCR and sat abet to study. Two hours later, my life, perspectives, and outlooks were dramatically transformed by meeting Supervisor Harvey Milk. So it is with tall excitement that this monumental film which pays tribute to a monumental time finally comes to DVD, and warrants my attention for my 200th review.

“The Times of Harvey Milk” is a transformative documentary both in style and information, created by visionary filmmakers Recall Epstein and Richard Schmiechen. The film not only covers the life of Milk, but the times which surrounded him that allows for a broader, more in-depth myth. From the opening moments of the film, we learn of Harvey’s untimely death, so as not to aggrandize it. Through personal interviews, newsreel coverage, and personal film shot at obvious events, everything is brought to a right, intense focus. You feel as if you are watching the events unfold as San Franscians must have done in the behind 1970’s.

The gleaming stars of the film are the personal interviews given by people who knew Harvey best. Tom Ammiano, friend of Harvey, gives the film a sense of outrage of the assassinations. Jim Elliot gives a heartwarming straight man, unionist perspective to note us Harvey’s universality. Henry Der allows us to look Harvey’s political side. Jannine Yeoman’s covering of the Milk campaign and post -assassination trial gives a sense of immediacy and urgency to the fable, and a more professional viewpoint. Bill Kraus, a overjoyed activist, soon to die of AIDS, provided a sense of Milk’s activism.

A couple of interviewee struck me personally. First, lesbian activist Sally Gearheart’s testimony of her work with Milk on the Proposition 6 campaign is very compelling, but her comments on the candlelight vigil and riots following the verdict are particularly poignant. Anne Kronenberg, who served as Milk’s campaign manager, provides the zeal and optimism of the youth who surrounded and supported Milk in his efforts. Last comes Tory Hartmann, who’s warmth on the veil is only seconded by her connection with Harvey. She provides an emotional recollection of the candlelight march that will leave you in tears.

Coming to DVD, this film looks rich and unusual, due to UCLA and its preservation processes. In addition to the film, the DVD brings you a second disk loaded with special features, from interviews with the film makers, to an 25th anniversary update of the Milk legacy by those who knew him best. I was particularly touched watching the “Alternate ending” fraction, in which Jim Elliot discloses, after describing his possess lunge as a straight man accepting homosexual Harvey Milk, learns his occupy daughter is also a lesbian, and that it was all okay, thereby completing validating Milk’s thoughts on coming out.

Not enough words can be said about “The Times of Harvey Milk”, a visionary, compelling documentary that should be shown, shared with everyone across this country. Milk’s legacy is not only for his homosexual brothers and sisters; it is a legacy for all of us. His legacy is that of tolerance towards all, collected shriek, fighting for what you enjoy in, and above all else, unprejudiced having the best time of your life.

That Harvey Milk’s election to the San Francisco city council made him the first openly satisfied elected official in the country certainly justifies this documentary behold at his life and career. The fact that this political event coincides with the ascendancy of Anita Bryant, the Right Majority, and California’s controversial Proposition 6 (which sought to gain it illegal to consume any contented person as a teacher in the state’s public school systems) gives the film a nail-biting second act. But add the fact that Milk and Mayor George Moscone were assassinated by fellow council person Dan White, and you have a riveting truth is stranger than fiction psycho-political drama. The scenes and remembrances of the spontaneous candlelight march from the Castro to City Hall by thousands of citizens are exciting and narrate of a pain and loss that goes deeper than words. The film goes on to document the Dan White trial, the “Twinkie Defense”, and the violent reaction to verdict. Unfortunately, you can’t idea the film today without realizing that at the time these interviews were being filmed, AIDS was already invisibly working its procedure through the community and would soon all but wipe out this generation of cheerful men in San Francisco. That’s a different sage, I know (witness Popular Threads: Stories from the Quilt ), but it’s like watching contented passengers board the Expansive, talking about a future that you know will never happen for many of them.

Parents are ultimately charged with assuring the well-being of their offspring. This is a not-for-profit endeavor. I was as timid by the actions of these parents as I am by the pushy stage mothers who dress their daughters up as mini-adults and parade them on stage to acquire pageants. I inspect that the father in this record would be objective as easily at home on a Miniature League field bullying an umpire as well as engineering this greed and publicity driven intention.

When that dawn came, it did nothing to bring the exploitation to an waste. The documentary later shows her tearfully regretting what has transpired, but this masterpiece of manipulation and exploitation continues. Therefore, I acquire her unprejudiced as culpable as the father, who is the ring-master of this sunless circus.

What is tremendously sure in this documentary is that this region had become quite disturbing, that this negativity was abundantly definite to the parents, and that they fostered the continuation of the exploitation.

This is a vivid and unprejudiced but very disturbing film.

This is a challenging documentary for anyone enthusiastic in art and the deeper questions about art and the art world. I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of the film and the philosophical questions it raises.

When the parents of 4-year musty Marla Olmstead initiate to sell her abstract paintings, the questions and the investigations open (interestingly it is not really the painting of the art that seems to be the yelp, but the selling of it) . Is Marla a prodigy? Is the only disagreement between her artwork and that of other 4-year olds the fact that she is getting thousands of dollars for hers? What does it mean to say a 4-year conventional “created” a painting? Was she “coached,” or “encouraged” by her father? Does that really matter? The human interest aspect of this film is exquisite, but the deeper questions it raises about the nature of art, and the reaction of the media and individuals to art, are even more gripping. The reflections offered by Michael Kimmelman, the Unusual York Times chief art critic, are especially thought-provoking.

The extras included with the film are not to be missed, for they go even deeper into the philosophical questions, and add remarkable to the basic sage presented in the film itself.

I remember sitting in front of my television, rapturously watching the documentary “Hollywood” created by Kevin Brownlow and David Gill in 1980. Each of the 13 segments dealing with a specific fraction of early Hollywood history, played on PBS and was a correct delight. In this era before DVD, and even VHS, it was a mountainous diagram to view a spacious number of rare clips from the Peaceful era. A few years later, they made “Unknown Chaplin”, perhaps the most astounding documentary ever created about the technical side of Hollywood. A few years later, “Buster Keaton: A Hard Act to Follow” continued the tradition.

“Unknown Chaplin” was fair released on DVD and is a must have addition for anyone even remotely eager in the history of film or filmmaking.

During production of “Hollywood”, Brownlow and Gill naturally wanted to devote an entire hour to Chaplin but ran into a roadblock. The person who controlled access to Chaplin’s work was only prepared to let them consume a “snippet”. They had to change their plans. They couldn’t fabricate an entire hour around a “snippet”. After “Hollywood” aired, to tremendous well-known acclaim, they tried again. Chaplin’s widow allowed them access to his personal vault. What they found there astonished them; row after row of film cans, many labeled with “City Lights”, “The Gold Hurry”, “The Circus” and many with weird names. These contained clips never before seen, projects started but never finished and rehearsals for films like “City Lights”. It was a savor trove for any film historian.

Naturally, they believed they had fair hit the mother load, but soon met a man named Raymond Rohauer. Rohauer, a film “collector”, claimed to have many reels of film from Chaplin’s Mutual days, the period immediately before Chaplin went independent and began to invent his sizable feature-length films. The Mutual period is considered by many to be Chaplin’s best, when he made his most notorious two-reelers, “The Immigrant”, “The Cure” and others along with “The Kid”. As they viewed this footage, Brownlow and Gill made a major realization; Chaplin worked out all of his films on the plot, while the cameras were rolling, providing a visual history of his work. Beginning with a bare outline he would began production, working out jokes on place, adding jokes, changing stories, and more. Sometimes, he would scrap everything and originate over. Or come by an view and change everything around. And the camera was always running while he did this.

Because of this “Unknown” presents one of the most thorough, captivating and illuminating looks at one of film’s legal masters and apt pioneers.

I have long owned the three-tape vhs version of this title. In the days before David Shephard, et al. set out all those dazzling restorations (and before Warner Bros. rereleased some early Chaplins), this series was the ONLY space to come by high quality Chaplin films, albeit not complete, and astonishing outtakes. I can’t recommend this series enough to any Chaplin fan. My pre-order is on file!!

I.M. Pei is one of my popular architects, so getting this DVD was a no-brainer. There actually aren’t that many comprehensive works on Pei either in print or in video, but this DVD helps to effect up for it very nicely, especially since Pei himself is the main narrator and you net two programs on one disc. There is perhaps nothing more animated than hearing a master advise about his work in his believe words.

There have been a lot of documentaries released over the years on Presley’s life and career. This 2008 film from Michael Rose Productions is one of the best and – while it covers some of the territory that’s been done before – there’s enough newly discovered footage and interviews to appeal to those who already gain “everything Elvis”.

Kris Kristofferson narrates the 90-minute film which takes us from Pressley’s birth in Tupelo, Mississippi (and even some background on his parents) through his high school years (with unique interviews with many of his high school friends) and on to his proceed to Memphis and recording for Sun Records. It stops in 1956 impartial as he heads to Hollywood to form his first film (“Fancy Me Tender”) . There is a lot of discussion about bustle and Elvis’ interest in Dusky music; more than I have seen before. And we hear the actual narrative unhurried his hip swiveling from his closest friends. Only two musicians are interviewed: One of the fresh Jordanaires and DJ Fontana, his drummer. Other interviews are with his early girl friends, country music historians and even local Tupelo tiur guides! Rose seemed to have found every person in Tupelo who ever knew Elvis and gathered some really rare footage and collected photos that I don’t deem have been shown before.

The 60 minutes of “bonus material” include newsreels about Elvis from the period (though why there is a 3-minute one on the Tornados in Tupelo, I don’t know) . And a 12 tiny “Drew Pearson’s Merry-go-round” film about Elvis from the 1950s. Then there are what must have been outtakes from the documentary where the interviewees comment on Elvis meeting Bill Monroe and the women who dated Elvis. These add nicely to the package.

Elvis fans will want this but so should anyone involved in pop culture and the music business in the early to mid-1950s.

This region is the second season of American Chopper. I am glad to say I don’t mediate there was as many screaming matches in this series as there was in the first. Although they level-headed do have a couple of doosies and in one episode you have to wonder why Vinnie doesn’t finish in disgust! There did feel like there was a couple of “filler” episodes with this series, in particular the Football Bike and Mikey Special. The Mikey Special was fair a wrap-up of what we have already seen in the last two seasons so I felt it was a slay of station. Regardless of that, unruffled enjoyed the second series immensely and am hanging to hold the third!

I would have gladly paid another $20-$30 for this status to have the COMPLETE 2nd season! $50-$60 is tranquil Method better than the stupifying $144 Discovery Channel want for this season! Here’s hoping that season 3 will be complete w/ all the episodes that aired.

Companeros! (1970) This is a very enchanting spaghetti western from director Sergio Corbucci (Tidy Fuzz) . The tale teams Italian superstars Franco Nero (Django) and Tomas Milian (Traffic) as reluctant mercenary pals teamed up to retrieve revolutionary Fernando Rey (The French Connection) from the clutches of his captors before creepy dreadful guy Jack Palance (Craze) can cancel him. A satisfactory filled with “all of the love” of Rey’s hometown that only Rey knows the combination to is the prize. With a tall Ennio Morricone accumulate, a lickety-split plug (despite a lengthy running time of exactly two hours) and a light hearted reach, Corbucci really scores with this buddy western. Nero and Milian have tons of camouflage presence and chemistry, and they are well matched against Palance, who is a lot of fun as a crazed pot smoking nutjob with one wooden hand and a pet falcon. As is usual with Italian films, everybody is dubbed (the Italians don’t usually recount sound while shooting, putting all of the sound in later in post production!) but the leads provide their fill voices, and it also seems almost everybody is speaking English since the words mostly match the lip movements of fair about everybody in the cast, making the dubbing far less noticeable than otherwise. The script also deserves some praise, with laughable lines and salty dialogue that combine with the plentiful action and stuntwork to execute this a highly recommended movie for those who like a edifying western now and again and a must for fans. Check this one out!

Right from the opening of the film, I knew it was going to be something huge. From the shot of the church to Ennio Morricone’s lustrous bag. There are large performances, tremendous laughs, and obviously some frigid hand held action in this film. It’s a fun scurry man! Franco Nero and Tomas Milian are a substantial team and Jack Palance as the post smokin’ dreadful guy is unprejudiced perfect. This is one of Corbucci’s last sizable westerns and certainly one you wouln’t want to miss.

One by one, the earlier four incarnations of the Doctor are being plucked out of the space-time continuum, and placed into the dreaded Death Zone. Originally feeble by the Time Lords for organizing gladiatorial matches between various races, Rassilon closed the Death Zone, and forbade the expend of the Time Scoop. So, who is doing this, and more importantly, why? It’s up to the Doctor (all of them) to figure it out.

This movie is a “Who-ite’s” dream. Four of the five Doctors are display, with Richard Hurndall performing very well as the formidable first Doctor. Many companions appear, including Turlough, Tegan, Susan (the Doctor’s Granddaughter), Sarah Jane, the Brigadier, Mike Yates, Liz Shaw, Jamie, Zoe, and K-9. Plus, of course, the Master (played by Anthony Ainley) . It is a shame that Tom Baker refused to be interested in this production, but he is reasonably represented by scenes taken from the never-completed episode Shada.

I recommend this movie absolutely to any fan of Doctor Who.

This 20th anniversary special is corny, essentially plotless and designed to cram in as many Doctors, companions and monsters as possible within 90 minutes. Composed, you’ve got to hand it to them – they did a bang-up job for a prove with a forever-fluctuating cast list (most notably our aged buddy Tom Baker, who turned the project down before filming and got replaced by some obsolete footage) . “The Five Doctors” is a fun romp down memory lane, and as such happens to be one of the very best ways to bring recent fans into the demonstrate (hey, it worked for me) .

So why did we exactly need a “special edition”? No, the visual effects aren’t especially gargantuan, but they never were on “Doctor Who.” The additional scenes, while engrossing, are mostly pointless additions that add nothing to the state. Probably the best changes in the Special Edition are a little rearrangement of events (which makes the narrative scoot a minute better) and some improved lightning effects. Not enough to explain a “Special Edition,” for distinct.

It’s worth recognizing, though, that the current version of “The Five Doctors” will probably be released one day, and in the meantime, this really isn’t a terrible disc (certainly not the worst of the Set 1 line, by a long shot) . Possibly where it disappoints the most is in the video department. The characterize suffers from a lot of grain (especially in the outdoor sequences) ; while a valuable step above the video, it pales in comparison to other ’80s-era Who stories on DVD. The 5.1 soundtrack, on the other hand, is quite nice indeed.

Admittedly the “Who’s Who” biographies are a bit sparing, but the half-hour of isolated musical get is a grand inclusion. Without a doubt, though, the best extra on the disc is the commentary with Peter Davison and Terrance Dicks, which was recorded especially for the Site 1 release. It remains one of the two or three best commentaries for the “Who” DVDs yet. Davison and Dicks create a huge team, both taking a jovial attitude towards proceedings. Since this disc’s release, Peter Davison has proven himself an invaluable commentator on other stories; I would very remarkable like to hear from Terrance Dicks again.

The memoir is a mountainous plan to find unusual fans into your accepted series, and the commentary alone makes the disc worth a seasoned fan’s win.

Once upon a time films were made with extreme budgets and heaps of imagination, and this is one of them. Though given a whopping $3M by the ego-maniac Dino de Laurentis (King Kong the deplorable remake) the genius Mario Bava brought this 60s beauty in at $400K. Even converted into today’s hard currency it would be hard to conceive of a unusual day director either struggling out of bed for such a miniscule sum, or ever bringing a film in under budget. Instead Bava treats the behold and the mind to a comely psychedelic modernist fantasy.

There seems to be a approved belief that many directors of the past were somehow more slow than the giant intellects of the cinema of today and that they had no comprehension of what they were doing. Bava knew exactly what he was making with this movie version of a common European humorous and that was to originate a film that was fun.

Pitted against a world of traditional stilted politics, bumbling police and chalk-stripe-suited Mafia villains Diabolik, a frigid ultra-thief with an underground lair to be envied by Dr No and every other inferior genius, outwits his pursuers time and time again with a manic laugh, a exquisite girl-friend and his ‘n’ hers Jaguar E-Types.

This film is a two-hour trip; the acquire is pleasant and the images have a gleaming organic feel unachievable with today’s over-processed CGI FX. If you treasure the visuals of Barbarella you’ll like this. Bava, though, has a more cynical conception of the world and in one scene presents us with a nightclub where villains ply the “innocent” hippies with drugs making them dance in hysterically amusing ways that is unbiased as an incisive critique of that era as it would be of some rave scenes today. Some things unbiased don’t change.

Sure if you want to adopt the plucky stance of the post-modernist and seize the sophisticated site of The One Who Laughs At Unpleasant Veteran Films then you’ll secure some kind of kick out of this. But you won’t fetch anything like the kick you will by fair relaxing into the brilliantly-lit excited world of Mario Bava where nothing is quite what it appears and baddies score – almost.

If you like Burt Bacharach, Ennio Morricone, if you loved Barbarella, Harry Palmer, etc… You can’t ignore “Anxiety : Diabolik”. I’ve been looking for this movie in Europe for 18 months, and finally ordered it accomplish the USA. And this is the most stylish film I’ve ever seen. Bad scenario (but this is definitely appetizing) with an incredible atmosphere. E-Type Jaguars, secret underground bases, mind-blowing music : this is how the world should be.

The passe DVD of “Up in Smoke” was what you’d examine — the movie duly presented plus a commentary with Cheech Marin and Adler, plus a handful of deleted scenes.

This time, Paramount fills the DVD bong with a terrific novel lively music video for the movie’s “Alice Bowie” song; a modern featurette with producer Lou Adler and Cheech & Chong (separately) talking about the movie; a high-speed montage of every instance someone says “man” in the movie; and some newly spicy 1970s radio promos — all of presented in the high spirits of the film.

The veteran commentary (ported over) and fresh featurette grunt some spacious tales about the movie and the people who worked on it, such as Stacey Keach, Tom Skerritt, Harry Dean Stanton, Edie Adams and one-man test audience Jack Nicholson.

The widescreen DVD images study mountainous, especially upconverted, with lots of intellectual, saturated well-known colors that approach across as reasonably natural. The music benefits from some tasty stereo separation and the dialogue is determined — even when the boys are obedient and zonked.

Out of all the Cheech & Chong collaborations, their first film, 1978’s Up In Smoke tranquil stands as the best. A comedy classic that unprejudiced can’t be duplicated, not even by themselves. The space (can you guess? ) concerns two dudes, Pedro (Cheech) & Man (Chong) and their search for the best weed, rock music, and kindly times, man. Of course this hasten comes with a brand, evading a group of “undercover” cops led by the obsessed Sgt. Stedenko (Stacy Keach) . If you like cars, you’ll no doubt indulge in Pedro’s Care For Machine, which he decorated himself, and the van made completely out of pot! Witness out for that smoke. A few of the funniest scenes reach from this van: 1. When the cop pulls them over and forgets why! and 2. When Stedenko and crew stand next to the smoking van and feel the influence, then order some pizzas! If you like to rock, then you’ve got that too. To quote the concert announcer – “…I don’t know who they are, but here’s ALICE BOWIE.” Being a drummer myself, I’m more than a exiguous jealous of Chong’s large drumsticks! However, I’m not jealous of Cheech’s tu-tu! The characters Cheech & Chong created began to wear out in later films, but don’t count this one out. Up In Smoke is when it was original and recent and somehow it mild “smokes” to this day.

Some comments on the DVD: One reviewer stated that the DVD doesn’t have any features, but that’s fair not suitable. I unprejudiced bought the 2000 Paramount DVD release and it has the following:

A tall contrivance to have a comedy classic and Paramount has given a small something to the fans with this DVD release. Don’t even sleep on it, impartial find this primo disc, man!
